Gibus & Cie / Redon Limoges Porcelains     g20

Pierre-Justin Gibus (1821-97) was a Limoges porcelain manufacturer who established Gibus & Cie in 1853, with partners Alpinien Margaine and Martial Redon (d1890), in a rented building on Rue des Trois-Chatains, Limoges. Gibus & Cie exhibited in Paris in 1855 and was praised for the whiteness of the paste and the elegance of the form. In 1865 Charles Haviland negociated the rights to sell Gibus & Cie porcelains in the USA.

About 1872 Margaine left to open his own company, and Gibus & Cie became Gibus & Redon, with high temperature decoration a specialty. A new factory in Faubourg des Casseaux (Limoges) in 1872 had about 2000 employees, was innovative in using steam-driven machinery, and generally won praise for the development of industrial methods.

In 1881/2 Gibus became deputy administrator of the of Bank of France and left Martial Redon as sole owner of the company. Redon renamed the company Martial Redon & Cie.

In 1886 Martial redon retired and brought his son Joseph Redon into the company. Joseph Redon joined Barny & Rigoni in 1902 and added the M. Redon mark of his father to Barney & Rigoni mark. He left the company in 1904, presumably leaving the porcelain business.
